Essex Puppy Training Satellite

Training classes are held at Writtle College, Chelmsford, who have donated the use of their facilities for free. Emily Lawrence, Essex Puppy Trainer, launched this Satellite in 2008. Emily’s experience with training dogs first started out, as many people do, with one rescued puppy, at her local dog training club. The club instructors suggested Emily go on various courses until one day she ended up teaching the puppy class at the club “ just for a couple of weeks because the instructor can’t make it”. She is still teaching the puppy class!

As well as training groups of puppies for the Kennel Club Bronze Good Citizen Test, Emily now owns and trains two rescue dogs in obedience and agility. “Several years ago I took my first course in British Sign Language (BSL). This was followed by several more and resulted in me helping deaf dog handlers to train their own dogs, both as pet dogs and with the aim of going on to train them as Hearing Dogs. Although I had always had an appreciation of the role assistance dogs played in their owners’ lives, it was whilst helping a 13-year old profoundly deaf girl to train her dog that I really came to understand the more subtle support that having a dog gave her, such as the confidence to walk to the shops on her own, something most 13-year olds take for granted! A typical day starts with admin and getting ready for my classes, then travelling to Writtle College and setting up the training arena or paddock for the classes, making sure there is plenty of tea and coffee for my hardworking Puppy Parents. As well as actual training there are conversations to be had with Puppy Parents over issues with individual dogs and food, flea and worm treatments to be given out and kept track of. Then it’s home for more paperwork and updating training records and health logs, and maybe a home visit or two for good measure.”

The Essex Satellite is still relatively new, so future plans at the moment are focused on recruiting more Puppy Parents and Foster Homes and getting more pups training in Essex. We are very lucky to have the support of dedicated fundraisers Lindsay and Clare in Essex. (Emily and puppy Overton pictured.)

Snow, Christmas and Orchid!

The Essex satellite puppy parents deserved an award for braving the treacherous snowbound conditions in early 2010 to attend puppy classes which are held at Writtle Agricultural College. The college is in the middle of countryside where the snow seemed to pile up higher than anywhere else so well done, dedicated puppy parents! However, Christmas was celebrated and their party included a fancy dress competition for the pups and demonstration dogs. The winner was demo dog Tally, with the puppy parents presented with certificates and gifts in recognition of their hard work; silly games, drinks and nibbles were enjoyed by all. Essex pup Rufus, went along with his puppy parent Alison to show off his skills to his sponsor, the Orchid group. Of course, Rufus behaved impeccably and predictably won a few hearts in the process.
