Intensive Training Process

The residential on-site training course

Successful applicants will of course need to learn how to continue with all their dog's training and welfare after they take him/her home with them and become his/her new Custodian. We do not expect Partners to know all about looking after dogs, as if by magic - everything needs to be carefully taught by our staff - started off by our Trainers who conduct a 2-week Residential Training Course in our Heyshott adapted facilities; and continued by our Aftercare Assistants once the Partner has returned home with their dog.

This Training Course combines theoretical lessons with practical exercises. Partners learn not only the basic skills required in the home, but also safe and correct practice in shops and on the street. They are shown how to train, care for and manage their dog and how to take responsibility for daily exercise, feeding, grooming and play. Partners will be equipped to begin working immediately with their Canine Partner, and will also be ready to cope with the demands of their new life together.

In situations where the nature of the Partner's condition makes it impossible for them to travel to Heyshott, we may provide the Training Course in a different way.

After returning home with their new Assistance Dog, an Aftercare Assistant continues to support the partnership, through its "settling-in" period and for the remainder of the dog's working life.
