Beverley bluebell walk raises £500 for Canine Partners

A bluebell walk that took place on Sunday 8 May at Beverley Westwood has raised £500 for Canine Partners, a charity that provides highly trained assistance dogs to people with disabilities.  Over 52 walkers attended ranging from 18 months upwards, with thirty dogs in tow.

Walkers covered a distance of 3-4 miles through the open pastureland of Beverley Westwood.  The weather stayed dry and reasonably sunny, despite a battering from the wind and rain the day before.

Walk organiser Tracy Westgarth comments, “We had a really successful day with a fantastic turnout from the local community.  We were delighted to be joined by volunteers and supporters from the puppy training satellite in Hull, including puppy parents.  I am already thinking about plans for next year’s event!”

One of the walkers was Sheila Wingell from Lincoln who is a volunteer puppy parent for Canine Partners.  This means she looks after a puppy whilst it is in training, attending weekly classes and helping to socialise the puppy into the community.  “Whilst the role of a puppy parent is voluntary, Canine Partners provides the food and equipment needed for each puppy, as well as covering vet bills whilst they are in my care.  However the love and attention that these puppies need comes naturally and is thoroughly rewarded as you see them develop and learn the skills they need to change the lives of someone with disabilities.”

Canine Partners is always looking for volunteers, fundraisers and puppy parents from the local community. If you would like to find out more, please contact Louise Norman on 01482 854422.
