Canine Partners puppy Bruce heads to Yeovil!

Canine Partners puppy Bruce heads to Yeovil!

A Yeovil lady will soon be welcoming the first puppy from Canine Partners, who provides specially trained assistance dogs to people with disabilities, into the town.  Eight week-old Bruce was donated by Sheila and John Sadler from Washford and will be attending weekly puppy training classes near Bridgwater.

Vivienne Bunce recently chose to volunteer as a puppy parent for Canine Partners after seeing a television programme featuring a lady whose life had been changed by the arrival of her canine partner.  Viv comments, “Watching Saints and Scroungers made such an impact on me that I felt I had to get involved with Canine Partners.  I was hugely impressed how one dog could help a person with disabilities gain independence and confidence, so I approached the Charity’s local puppy satellite in Stawell.”

Viv was soon taken on as a puppy parent - someone who offers a home to puppies whilst in training, attends weekly puppy training classes with them and helps to socialise them into the local community.  “I have had Yorkshire Terriers for years and always loved dogs,” Viv continues.  “I am very excited about being part of an organisation that does so much for people.  It’s an amazing opportunity to help, as well as learn more about training larger breed dogs.  I hope members of the local community will welcome us and stop to learn more about Canine Partners.”

Viv’s new charge Bruce is a golden retriever and comes from an impressive background.  His mother is half sister to canine partner Kerly who assists Sheila Sadler from Washford, a wheelchair user following a road traffic accident.  His father is the son of Sheila’s previous canine partner Juneau who sadly passed away in 2009, making Bruce his grandson.  “He has some big paw prints to fill in the future,” comments Sheila.  “We are delighted to be able to donate Bruce and have been fundraising extensively in the local area over the past year to help support the work of Canine Partners in the West.  We encourage people like Viv to volunteer their time to becoming puppy parents, it is such a rewarding role.”

A Canine Partners puppy parent will look after a puppy from the age of eight weeks up until it is ready for advanced training, which can take from 6-18 months.  Reasonable travel expenses will be covered, puppy food, toys, equipment, all veterinary costs and training is provided.  If you are interested in finding out more, please contact Heather Loan 07826 232 727.
