Disabled Fareham man tackles Great South Run

David has congenital paraplegia and uses a wheelchair.  In 2007 he graduated with canine partner Zack, who helps him with everyday tasks such as picking up dropped items, opening doors, supermarket shopping and much more.  David has always wanted to do something to help raise funds for Canine Partners, as a way of giving back to the Charity that has helped him so much.

“I did a mega marathon (100 miles) about 20 years ago and wanted to do something big again.  Being 20 years older and a lot less fit, this seemed like the right challenge.  I joined a gym for the first time in ten years, booked a personal trainer and hit the weights.  I also hit the road getting my daily distance up to 4-5 miles.  Despite sustaining some injuries I decided I felt fit enough to give it a go on the day.  I was therefore delighted to get round in such a good time without running out of steam.  The greatest motivation to keep going was the knowledge that each mile put me closer to my fundraising target.  The crowds also made a huge difference as their cheers helped me battle through the pain and fatigue to keep up the pace until the end.  Roll on next year and a little more training I might just beat my time to dust!”
