You Are Here : Disabled York Woman to Take Part in Three 10k Races for Canine Partners

Cheryl, 30, has Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, which is a virus that attacked her nervous system and left her in a wheelchair. She was partnered with Orca in 2003, who helps her with everyday tasks including picking up dropped items and housework, as well as assisting her in her job as a science teacher at York High School. He has even saved Cheryl’s life by fetching help when she fell down a steep embankment into a water-filled ditch and was Best Dog at her wedding!
Cheryl will be competing in her racing wheelchair at the events, which take place in Hull (15 May), Leeds (19 June) and York (31 July).
Cheryl comments, “I first got into such events when I bought a racing chair four years ago and I love participating in mass running events. After all the support I have had from Canine Partners, it makes sense for me to raise funds on their behalf. I have had Orca for almost eight years and I cannot imagine life without him – he truly is my best friend. Wherever I go I have my boy with me and I wouldn’t trade him for anything.”
