Local Woman to compete in Trophy of the Mountains for Canine Partners

Jenny Brown from West Malling will be competing in the gruelling cani-cross event Trophy of the Mountains, with her dog Tiga, to raise funds for national charity Canine Partners - who provide specially trained assistance dogs to people with disabilities.  The event takes place in August 2011 and includes 12 races across the French Alps, including three at night.

Jenny, a member of Ashford Athletic Club, first discovered cani-cross (canine cross-country where the dog runs in front attached to the owner) when she was given a dog for her 50th birthday.  A car accident three years previously had left her with injuries that meant she couldn’t continue with her passion for track and field athletics, especially high jump.  She therefore started running with her dog Tiga, a beagle, and it went from there.  She has already been selected for the British Team and is currently top of the leader board in the individual championships this year.

Trophy of the Mountains is a nine-day event across five villages in the French Alps at altitude of up to 2200m.  Up to 150 runners and their dogs compete in 12 races, nine of which are early morning, three of which take place at night – times set to best suit the dogs.

Jenny comments, “This is an exciting challenge for me and I have never done anything like it before.  Cani-cross is an excellent sport for anyone who likes running and has a dog.  I was inspired to raise funds for Canine Partners as they help people with a wide variety of disabilities to lead an infinitely more independent life.”
