You Are Here : Team Collett Complete Great South Run
Christian and Jessica Collett, aged eight and five respectively, gamely took part in the 1.5km Mini-run on 29 October, with Christian coming an impressive 28th.
The entire Collett family are inspired to raise funds for Canine Partners, as Matthew’s mother Sheila Sadler from Washford in Somerset has canine partner Kerly after being injured in a road traffic accident. Both Sheila and her husband John, accompanied by canine partner Kerly and pet dog Rohan, joined the team of supporters for Team Collett.
Matthew comments, “The race started in a chaotic fashion, as I had a bad back and the remaining three runners in our party got held up in traffic - with one having to abandon his car and sprint three miles to the start! We were quite a sight in our Canine Partners purple headbands, but made a steady pace spurred on by the sounds of “come on the purple hair people!” It was a great effort by all involved in the day to complete the race and I was glad the children could be part of it, as well as Mum and Dad being there to cheer us on. Bring on next year!”
Sheila Sadler graduated with her second canine partner Kerly in 2010. “Each morning I open my eyes to find Kerly’s face alongside me. I sit on the edge of the bed and he gives me my slippers, then placing my hands on his neck and rump, I am able to stand. The word washing brings him running and he opens the washing machine door, takes each item out and places it in a basket. When I go for a rest, Kerly undoes the Velcro on my shoes, then takes them and my socks off. He will fetch identified objects such as glasses, pen, my stick, mobile phone and when we go out, his lead and jacket. Out and about he is alert for anything I drop. He opens doors in shopping precincts, calls a lift, gets items from low shelves and gives my purse to shop assistants. Kerly is my lifeline, his presence makes me a whole person physically and emotionally every day.”
