Willing dog lovers needed to home and care for puppies, whilst they learn the skills they need to become a canine partner at the recently opened Puppy Training Satellite in Stawell near Bridgwater. Pictured: First Somerset puppy Xagan; Sheila with canine partner Kerly.
Puppies stay with puppy parents from approximately 8 weeks old until they are considered ready to be returned to the Charity headquarters for assessment or advanced training, which can be between 6-18 months. Although previous experience with dogs is not required, a puppy parent needs to meet the following criteria:
• Be at home most of the day
• Have a secure dog friendly garden
• Have the stamina to manage an active young puppy
• Transport to attend weekly puppy classes in Stawell
• Follow Canine Partners training methods
• Wave the puppy goodbye when your good work is finished
• Enjoy the fun of classes and outings
Canine Partners will provide food and equipment for the puppy and cover all veterinary costs for the duration of the puppy parent relationship.
Puppy Satellite Trainer Heather Loan comments, “Being a puppy parent is a marvellous opportunity for people willing to attend weekly training classes in Stawell to learn how to train a dog in a positive way. Many tears are shed when the puppy who has been sharing your family life has to move on to the next stage of his training. However, the pride in knowing your puppy will change someone's life forever when it graduates as one half of a special partnership is enormous. We also need people from the local area for other voluntary roles and fundraising, so if you can spare some time it would be lovely to hear from you.”
Sheila Sadler from Washford suffered multiple injuries following a road traffic accident, which left her in a wheelchair. Sheila’s canine partner Kerly helps her with no end of tasks that able bodied people take for granted. “Each morning I open my eyes to find Kerly’s face alongside me. I sit on the edge of the bed and he gives me my slippers, then placing my hands on his neck and rump, I am able to stand. Kerly is my lifeline, his presence makes me a whole person physically and emotionally every day.”
